Greetings from your KVMA Foundation!

I want to take this opportunity to thank you for your generous support of the Foundation, update you on the activities of the Foundation this past year, and ask for your continued support of this worthwhile cause.

We continue to support student scholarships at the KSU College of Veterinary Medicine and our ongoing efforts of public education at the Kansas State Fair through the KSUCVM Birthing Center and KVMA Exhibit. We are making some changes in this latter project and are excited about the role it continues to play in educating the public on where their food and fiber comes from and the role of veterinary medicine in this process as well as the many other facets of veterinary medicine. This past September the college had a set of two senior students for the first half and two senior students for the second half of the fair who stayed over in Hutchinson along with a faculty resident to monitor and be available for animal assistance during the night at the Birthing Center. The foundation provided stipends of $500.00 for each student for each of the two rotations for a total investment of $2000.00.

This spring we funded eighteen $1000.00 scholarships (seventeen Kansas resident and one out-of-state student) at the KSUCVM. To date I have received one thank you note and twelve full page thank you letters from the recipients of these awards. I think this speaks of the quality of the young men and women we are assisting and reflects well on the KSUCVM and its faculty. The sentiment of these letters is best summed up in the final paragraph of a second year students letter. I wish to share it with you here unedited in its entirety:

"Your contribution to Kansas State has aided me in achieving my lifelong goal of becoming a veterinarian. You are aware that the price of education is rising dramatically and your donation has helped to offset these rising costs. I believe it is important that donors to Kansas State realize the gratitude students have for the scholarships they provide. And for this reason, I would like to thank you once again for your munificent donation to Kansas State's College of Veterinary Medicine."

The money we have invested with the KSU Foundation is doing as well as any investments are these days with low interest rates. We have expended $20,000 this past school year in student assistance and would like to continue with this amount or more annually. Obviously, we cannot rely on interest income alone to fund this effort. Your KVMA dues renewal statement will have a place where you may contribute to the KVMA Educational Foundation. Won't you join in supporting this effort?! All contributions are appreciated and apply toward your name being placed on the Wall of Honor when you reach the $1200 level. Two hundred dollars annually puts you in the "Coffee Cup Club" which used to be equivalent to the cost of a cup of coffee a day before the days of Starbucks. If you are already on "the wall" you obviously know the importance of this project and may continue to work toward reaching the higher brackets on the Wall of Honor which are set at twenty-five hundred and five, ten and twenty thousand dollars.

Once again thank you for your past support and we look forward to hearing from you and your support for the next generation of veterinarians.

Richard D. Knewtson, DVM
